Age and sun spots appear on the face and body, over time as a result of overexposure to the sun. As we age our skin is subjected to more and more sun damage. Skin absorbs sunlight and over time our skins natural ability to fend off UV rays begins to deteriorate and melanin is deposited causing a freckle or brown spot. Melanin is the substance in our body that is responsible for skin color and its production increases with sun exposure.
Here at CEC the most common methods of treating age or sun spots are:
- Medlite II&Medlite C6
- Prolite IPL
- Medical Grade Skin Care Products
Medlite II&Medlite C6 YAG Laser treatments for age and sun spots is quick, safe, clinically proven and with minimal discomfort lasting only a few minutes.Depending on the type of spots and their location, they can often be treated successfully with one laser session however, some require two or more laser sessions for complete removal. At our cosmetic center we offer birthmark removal and mole removal aswell.
The YAG Laser works by producing an intense burst of light that targets the “overabundant” melanin (or benign pigmented lesions), breaking the pigment into microscopic particles that the body then absorbs, without harming the surrounding tissue.
The treatment should not interfere with normal skin color, although the possibility of some whitening or darkening of the skin may occur, especially on tanned or sun damaged skin.
Laser removal of age and sun spots is typically dramatic. In some people new spots and reappearance of spots may occur especially if they continue to expose their skin to the sun.
Prolite IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is an FDA approved safe, effective treatment for brown spots. Although the IPL is not a laser it works in very much the same way as the YAG laser when treating brown spots. Spots treated with the Prolite IPL will become darker, crust over and slough off. A minimum of 3 treatments are generally required to see the best results.
A sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher is necessary to protect the treatment site to prevent new and
recurrent areas. As with all of our laser treatments, regular application of sunscreen and staying out of the sun are highly recommended.
Medical Grade Skin Care Products are also an option for treating age and sun spots as well as Melasma. Cosmetic Enhancement Center carries Obagi Medical skin care products containing 4% Hydroquinone, which is prescription strength.Hydroquinone can reduce or block melanin production. It does not bleach the skin, but lightens it.
Melasma is a common skin condition that causes brown patches on sun exposed areas. It is mainly seen on the cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip and chin. Women are more likely to have Melasma, because it can be triggered hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or oral contraceptives, but sun exposure is the main cause.
