Actinic keratosis is a skin condition that is a result of sun exposure. It appears as a rough, scaly patch and is most commonly found on the face, scalp, ears, neck, as well as other sun exposed areas. Also known as solar keratosis, actinic keratosis enlarges slowly and takes years to develop therefore it generally appears in older adults. Left untreated, actinic keratosis can possibly become squamous cell skin cancer.
At CEC we treatactinic keratosis with Photodynamic Light Therapy. This consists of the application of Levulan®Kerastick® (aminolevulinic acid HCl) Topical Solution followed by Red Light Therapy with the Omnilux md™ clear-u device. The Levulan® causes the treated areas to become extremely light sensitive, so when the treated areas are exposed to the red light a reaction occurs and the actinic keratosis cells are destroyed.
