Spider veins are not only uncomfortable, but they can be aesthetically displeasing. If you are bothered by the appearance of these veins, the Cosmetic Enhancement Center of New England can help boost your confidence and make you feel more comfortable with the way you look. One of the solutions we offer to improve the appearance of troublesome veins is sclerotherapy: a medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins.
Cosmetic Enhancement Center of New England has grown into Maine’s largest and most respected medical aesthetic facility since opening its doors in 1988. Dr. Maria Atkins leads her medical staff in using the latest and most cutting-edge technology to help you reach your goals.
What exactly is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard in spider vein treatment and has been successfully used since the 1930s. The procedure involves an injection of a sclerosing solution directly into the desired treatment area. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and the blood to clot. As a result, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades over time.
What can I expect from sclerotherapy?
Using a very fine needle, a member of our medical staff will administer a sclerosing solution into the spider veins. Depending on the size of the veins being treated, some patients may experience a mild discomfort at first, but this will subside after a few minutes. Typically, the procedure takes about 30 minutes, but treatment time will ultimately depend on the number of veins being treated. Patients can return to their normal activities the same day and the use of compression stockings is recommended after treatment.
What should I do prior to treatment?
Before sclerotherapy, we recommend all patients avoid taking over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Schedule a free consultation with a member of our medical staff to determine how to best prepare for sclerotherapy.
