Birthmarks are skin blemishes on newborn babies that can develop before birth or appear soon after. Birthmarks can range in size from smaller than a pea to covering large portions of a person’s face or body. While many people don’t mind their birthmarks, abnormally large marks in noticeable areas may cause embarrassment or concern.
A common cause of birthmarks is hemangioma, the concentrated growth of blood vessels in one small area close to the surface of the skin, and this is what makes some birthmarks appear red or purple. Another common type of birthmark is the brown birthmark.
Brown birthmarks are characterized by unusually high levels of melanin or other pigments in the skin. Like in hemangiomas, this high concentration in one particular area of the body causes skin discoloration. Like almost all birthmarks, brown birthmarks pose no health risks, but they are often removed for cosmetic reasons.
At the Cosmetic Enhancement Center of New England, we use laser technology to remove these brown birthmarks. The Alex TriVantage Laser is the preferred treatment method. The Alex TriVantage works by selectively b the excess melanin with a strong burst of high intensity light that leaves the surrounding skin unharmed and unchanged.
Another form of a brown birthmark is a mole, medically referred to as congenital pigmented nevi. Moles can be removed for cosmetic reasons, but they are commonly removed surgically when dermatologists or physicians suspect a possibility of skin cancer. At the CEC, moles are removed with the Ellman® device. This procedure uses Radiowave Technology, which allows for quicker removal than traditional surgeries. With the faster and less invasive procedure, patients experience less discomfort and quicker healing times.
