While many individuals request tattoo removal for body art they originally wanted and paid for, there is another type of tattoo that many people are seeking removal for. A radiation tattoo is a mark left after someone undergoes radiation therapy for cancer. Those marks are used to ensure accurate placement of the radiation therapy during treatment.Once treatment is complete and the person is cancer free, the tattoos serve as a constant reminder of the battle fought and won.
Offering free treatments for radiation tattoos is something that Maria Atkins,D.O., owner and Medical Director of Cosmetic Enhancement Center, has been thinking about for a while, but was prompted to take action after a recent meeting with a patient. When this woman met with her doctor and expressed how upsetting these small tattoos were to her, she was basically told ‘what are you worried about those for? You’re alive.’ Well, she is now cancer free and ready to put it all behind her and even though these tattoos are very small, they are a constant reminder of what she, and millions of others went through, battling cancer.
Although offering these free treatments started as a way to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October (2012), Dr. Atkins is now offering radiation tattoo removal treatments to any cancer survivor seeking to have these tattoos removed as a full-time service. The procedure is performed right in the office, only take a few minutes and regular activities can resume immediately after treatment.
