Aging takes a toll on our bodies; our skin in particular. Your skin has been exposed to the elements your entire life. Depending on lifestyle, skin may start to look a bit weathered as the years go by. If you’ve spent a lot of time out in the sun during your life, either to achieve a desired skin tone or for work, it’s likely you’ve developed sun spots.
A sun spot is a flat, brown mark that appears most often on areas exposed to the sun, like the face, arms, and shoulders. True sun spots are not cancerous or harmful, but they can be unsightly and leave a person dissatisfied with their appearance. The good news is there are many things you can do to prevent or treat sun spots. These include:
- Avoid the sun and wear sunscreen. This is the most basic preventative method for sun spots. Particularly if you are over the age of 50 and have fair skin, try to shield yourself from direct sunlight if at all possible. If a day in the sun is unavoidable, sunscreen works wonders to protect your skin!
- Try cleansing with an exfoliator. Exfoliating skin products containing pineapple, papaya, salicylic, or glycolic acid will help remove dead skin cells that contain the unpleasing pigments. This will reduce the appearance of sun spots in many people. If this works for you, remember to wear sunscreen daily to prevent the return of the spot. After 4-6 weeks, there are medical procedures to help if the spot doesn’t go away.
- Medical procedures. There are a variety of medical procedures designed to fight age spots; these include the Alex TriVantage, and Prolite IPL, both of which we offer. The Alex TriVantage has been known to get rid of sun spots in a single treatment! This is a laser procedure that targets excess pigment. The Prolite IPL is not a laser, but works in much the same way; however, clients often need up to 3 treatments for complete sun spot removal.
